ââ¬Å"An Inspector Callsâ⬠was written in 1945, in just one week, by Bradford born writer, John Boynton Priestley. In his life, he wrote over one hundred novels, plays and essays. In July 1941 Priestley and other members of a committee established the socialist common wealth party. Bock and Mitch Glaser Isaiah 2:1-22 The second chapter of Isaiah is written in form of a poem from the beginning to the fifth verse. Isaiah is praising God and giving his promises to Go d concerning the people of Israel. Poetry is amongst the seven key features that Isaiah uses in order to communicate his message and make the people of Israel to repent their evil ways and go back to God. The theme that Isaiah uses in his prophecy is the theme of anger. From verse six Isaiah is unhappy with the people of Israel for their continued disobedience to God. To express his anger, Isaiah goes to an extent of telling God not to forgive His people. Verse 9 ââ¬Å"everyone will be humiliated and disgraced. Do not forgive them Lordâ⬠2. Isaiah also uses hyperbole in this prophecy in order to make people repent. In his prophecy he says that the Lord will destroy all the tall cedars of Lebanon and all the oaks of Bashan Isaiah 2: 13. In verse 14 of the same chapter, he says that the Lord will level all the mountains and hills due to His anger. In addition to this Isaiah uses exaggeration to communicate his message. He tells God that the Israelites land is full of silver and g old and therefore there is no end to their treasures. He also continues by arguing that their land is full of horses hence no end to their chariots. In the poems ââ¬Å"The Lambâ⬠and ââ¬Å"The Tyger,â⬠the writer uses words that describe how the Lamb is one of innocence and purity. The Tyger is one that has the reader interpreting that he is one of evil and no remorse. It has the reader comparing the two different beings to what life is now as we know it. So when writers write their poems and want to express feelings for the readers, they use physical locations for the feeling of placement or feelings. They use colors for the sense of the characters feelings. For instance the colors white, gray and black would represent sadness of gloominess. Brighter colors make the characters happy or cheery. The colors can make the setting one of the readers can feel. He uses words that describe the environment using colors and descriptive words. When a poem is written that grasps the readerââ¬â¢s attention and makes him feel the intensity and tone of it, the reader can understand and empathize with the characters of the poem. If the beginning lines of the poem grab the attention of the reader, and keeps the attention without losing momentum, then the poem is one that the reader will enjoy reading and read over and over. Poems are to stimulate the senses of the reader and they compare the words of the poem with reality. They use words to build up the emotions they are trying to put into the poem they are writing. They keep the readers interest by using rhymes, form and soundââ¬â¢s throughout. As we read we look for the next intense point of the poem and decipher the meaning as we interpret it. Poems are a great way for a person to indentify personal feelings and experiences. By using the poem as a wall for their feelings, readers can identify and compare to their own feelings and experiences. That is why writers who want you to feel their writings and explore their world of poetry will use different ways to express and present feelings, moods and atmospheres through their writings. The Rich Diversity of Meanings of the Pardoner's Tale Chaucerââ¬â¢s innovation in the Pardonerââ¬â¢s performance tests our concept of dramatic irony by suggesting information regarding the Pardonerââ¬â¢s sexuality, gender identity, and spirituality, major categories in the politics of identity, without confirming that information. Our presumed understanding of the Pardoner as a character lacks substantiation. As we learn about the Pardoner through the narratorââ¬â¢s eyes and ears, we look to fit the "noble ecclesiaste" (l. 708) into the figure shaped by our own prejudices and perceptions, as any active reader must do. But the Pardoner, ever aware of his audience, does not offer clear clues to his personality. This break between what the other characters say about the Pardoner and what the Pardoner says about himself has been a major source of tension for all readers of the Tales and especially critics who search for substantiation of their views beyond the Chaucerââ¬â¢s own language. The general tone of the Canterbury Tal es is comic. After all, the pilgrims are traveling to the shrine St. Thomas Beckett in a public act of holy reverence, but the Tales take a darker turn when the Pardoner is brought to the foreground. The whole Canterbury Tales is a collected set of performances, stories told about telling stories. As Joseph Ganim has written, theatricality, by which he means "a governing sense of performance, an interplay among the authorââ¬â¢s voice, his fictional characters, and his immediate audience," is "a paradigm for the Chaucerian poetic" (5). UABDL has some external factors as well like competitors, customers, suppliers etc. these factors come from outside the business. One of their major external factors is their competitors. 2. 1. Competitors of UABDL The market condition in Bangladesh is unpredictable.Attaining total success is a difficult task, as one need to win the hearts and souls of the people by adopting proper marketing strategy with a competitive price. Quality is the major tool for UABDL. The main competitors of UABDL are Biman Bangladesh Airlines, GMG Airlines, and Royal Bengal Airlines. Still it is increasing its position in terms of market share. Though, constantly they are under the threat from potential competit ors, but they are doing well. Also it is doing very well as a new company though there are some limitations. There will be many competitors in the future also in this sector. But UABDL thinks that to achieve its vision, it has to be superior to its competitors. SWOT AnalysisSWOT analysis is a basic, straightforward model that provides direction and serves as a basis for the development of marketing plans. It accomplishes this by assessing an organizationââ¬â¢s strengths (what an organization can do) and weaknesses (what an organization cannot do) in addition to opportunities (potential favorable conditions for an organization) and threats (potential unfavorable conditions for an organization). SWOT analysis is an important step in planning and its value is often underestimated despite the simplicity in creation. The role of SWOT analysis is to take information from the environmental analysis and separate it into internal issues (strengths and weaknesses) and external issues (oppo rtunities and threats).Once this is completed, SWOT analysis determines if the information indicates something that will assist the firm in accomplishing its objectives (a strength or opportunity), or if it indicates an obstacle that must be overcome or minimized to achieve desired results (weakness or threat). Lower Ticket Fair than OthersUABDL offers most competitive price compared to its competitors like GMG Airlines or Biman Bangladesh Airlines. This pricing strategy helps the company to attract more customers. 1. 5. Own Aircrafts UABDL does not lease the aircrafts like its competitors. No other airline companies in Bangladesh have their own aircrafts. But UABDL has its own aircrafts. This is one of the factors that Uni ted Airways can charge less than its competitors. 1. 6. Strong Management United Airways (BD) Ltd. has a dynamic team of pilots, engineers, marketing and sales people, finance managers, consultants and officials led by its Managing Director Capt. Unfulfilled Marketing Promises Sometimes UABDL fails to fulfill the promises which were conducted during their marketing. But this kind of situation takes place very rarely in this company. 2. 2. Unavailability of Servicing Equipments Servicing equipments of the aircrafts are not available in Bangladesh. UABDL has to bring those equipments from abroad. This fact increases the servicing cost. 2. 3. Insufficient FundIt is very difficult to run airline business in a developing country like Bangladesh as this business is very costly to run. It is also very difficult to build a sufficient fund in Bangladesh. UABDL is facing this problem in this country. 3. High Growth Rate of Potential Customers The growth rate of potential customers is high as many people from Bangladesh are going abroad for different purposes. Economic Condition of Bangladesh Bangladesh is a developing country of the third world.The economy of the country is not strong. Unwillingness of the Banks to Finance Banks in Bangladesh are not very helpful to the airline companies like UABDL to support them financially. Albatross Unit 3 Assignment
Introduction This case mainly deals with the varying types of operational challenges that Albatross Anchor is currently facing. The pricing is not a major issue for the organization and it is able to sell its products at a consistent market rate; however it is unable to realise its full profit potential due to the presence of a lot of operational inefficiencies. It is evident that if the firm is able to overcome all of these challenges, it can make the same level of profits as that of their competitors and can also facilitate their future growth exponentially. We have also analyzed two possible options which can be implemented and have assessed of which may be the most viable option for the company. We have also reached on a conclusion regarding the benefits the company can reap by implementing the strategies in their operational management plan. Question One Based on the information presented in the scenario/case study discuss Albatross Anchorââ¬â¢s competitiveness in relation to (please address all items in the below list and provide support for your conclusions): 1. Cost ) Cost of Production: Due to the presence of operational inefficiencies, Albatross Anchor is unable to reduce their costs as a result of which they have a lower profit margin. Therefore, they have a cost of production disadvantage as compared to their competitors. b) Economies of Scale in material purchasing: They can enjoy Economies of Scale when it comes to purchasing materials. Buying in bulk means they can get discounts from the suppliers on their purchase. c) Co st of Raw Materials Sitting Idle in the Warehouse: The increased amount of goods stored in the warehouse means that Albatross Anchor also needs to incur higher amounts of holding costs of storing the large amounts of inventory. Holding costs refers to the cost of carrying an inventory and may include costs such as, depreciation, deterioration, spoilage, taxes and insurance to name a few. d) Cost of Finished Goods Sitting Idle in the Warehouse: For the international orders the inventory of finished goods stays in the inventory along with the raw materials since the production is only done in small batches. This ultimately increases the holding cost for both the finished goods as well as the raw materials. 2. Speed of manufacturing process from order to finished product. Since the products are produced in limited quantities all the raw materials can be used more effectively. This also reduces the number of complexities during the manufacturing process. Currently their production is strictly dependent on the amount of demand for their products. 3. Flexibility in filling order(s) The manufacturing process is very constrained and is not flexible enough to house the smooth production of two different types of products. Each individual type of anchor requires their exclusive set of manufacturing line and therefore the time required to switch from one mode to another manufacturing mode requires 36 hours; which is quite a long time. 4. Technology The manufacturing process is deprived of new technology, making the process even more painstakingly slow. They are still using the traditional methods of making the anchors. 5. Capacity and facilities The current plan of their facilities is clearly insufficient for managing their operations smoothly. The space for storing the finished goods and the raw materials is located towards the far south of the entire facility and it takes a considerable amount of time and effort to ship the finish goods from there. If the manufacturing area is moved closer to the shipping area; it will save considerable amount of time in shipping these finished products. The foundry is not a part of the manufacturing department which further impairs the smooth flow of work in the production process. If the foundry is moved towards the manufacturing process it may increase the firmââ¬â¢s ability to cater to international orders more quickly. For having a mixed model of manufacturing process the Focused Factory process can be used. The Focused Factory aims for a narrow range of products and processes; as a result these factories are also small and quite simple and focus on only one or two products. 6. Service to customers Currently Albatross Anchors only sell their products through OEM customers and to the distributors. Apart from this, their products are of superior quality and are available to the customers in two varied forms. This not only gives Albatross Anchors greater choice, but also ensures that it leads to greater customer satisfaction. However, due to its current operational management procedures it is unable to reap the benefits of it as compared to their competitors. Question Two There are many ways that mushroom/bell anchors may be manufactured. Albatross Anchor is considering two new manufacturing processes (Process A and Process B) to reduce costs. Analysis of the information below will help determine which process has the lowest breakeven point (this validates the process is more cost effective). Here are their answers: thinking about change major I am coming from top 5 Chinese university and I did internship at senior year. I am a synthesis intern. From what I learned, there are a lot of jobs in the market, many new pharm companies. But the problem is the payment is very low (3k RMB in Nanjing. too low to survive in the city, but the company is in the poor area of the city, living standards are low) and the working condition is really bad, and working hours are long. One group member left the company because of health reasons, the doc warned him. I applied to US school then. It is nice to study aboard with stipend, but it is not enough to live in the city. It seems like chem job in US is impossible, and I certainly dont wanna go back china to work in chem job. As an analytical chemist you will get around 30k to 45k. if you have a PhD and dont mind risk you life to work with explosive chemical reactions then you can get 45K to 70K. The reality is that there are just too many candidates available in the job market and many of them are PhD. There are no job security in this field. Many big company already moved their RD and manufacturing facility to Asia and they rarely offer perm position to technical positions. Ive seen too many people ordered to leave the company without a minute notice because they are on contract. - Peter L Tough but worked out so far I recently received my Ph.D. in organic chemistry (top 35 school). I had to work very hard for a long time including a 1 year industrial post doc. Now I work at the same company as a process chemist synthesizing active pharmaceutical ingredients. The pay is 80,000 and I love my job. It was very hard to find a job after my Ph.D. and I sent resumes all over the country. I love my job now and have even received calls from recruiters for other job opportunities. I think the job market is competitive and the supply is greater than the demand at the BS/MS level. I had a low paying temp job with my BS in chemistry before I decided to go to grad school. I think if your going to work as a chemist get your Ph.D. The work is more interesting and the pay is better. Also there are so many BS/MS chemists one of the best ways to beat the competition is to get your PhD. From 2007-2010 I did QC work for the same company. I took a job with a different company in 2011 and have been doing primarily ingredient preparation. For me, this consists of formulation, production of different blends, syntheses, and some minor mechanical maintenance. Counting bonuses, I grossed over $70,000 in 2011. I have worked under PhD chemists who make 6 figures a year. My short term objective at this point is to obtain my MS in chemistry. Nature and Loneliness Poetry has themes in them that are at times hard to decipher. In the poems ââ¬Å"Once by the Pacific,â⬠ââ¬Å"Acquainted with the night,â⬠and ââ¬Å"Tree at my Window,â⬠by Robert Frost all have similar themes. Each of these poems has the theme of nature and loneliness. Also, the first two poems have a negative tone to them. In the sonnet ââ¬Å"Once by the Pacific,â⬠nature is brought up as the theme because the whole poem deals with talking about a rough ocean and a rocky cliff. Frost is describing a beach seen which seems to be just around dusk. Also, the way he is talking sounds like the there also might be a storm coming in because he is talking he says, ââ¬Å"Someone had better be prepared for great rage. There would be more then ocean water-broken.â⬠(DiYanni 578) That line gives the reader the impression that there might be a violent storm coming into that beach area. Rage could also be a foreshadowing of Frostsââ¬â¢ father being violent. ââ¬Å"The rage discovered in the natural world, with its threat of dangerous storm, was not unlike the rage often found in Will Frost, who might well erupt before the household lamps were extinguished on any given night.â⬠(Parni 14) This could mean why the seen was so gloomy to Frost. In this sonnet loneliness is shown too because there is nothing pleasant said. This could show that the writer was isolated and unhappy. This sonnet also has a very negative tone to it. Frost shows a dark dreary side in this sonnet. Everything that is written in the poem shows gloom towards the coastline he is looking at. In Frostââ¬â¢s poem ââ¬Å"Acquainted with the Nightâ⬠he shows loneliness again as a main theme. In this poem it is easier to see it because it is talking about a man who walks around city streets alone at night. He talks about how he walks around the city in any weather condition and also about what he sees on his nightly walks. Loneliness is evident when frost says,... Popular Theories of Leadership Many different writers and researchers have come out with differing styles and behavioral aspects of leadership and relevant theories. Theories of leadership may be classified under three headings: i. Trait theories, ii. Style theories, iii. Contingency theories. Trait Theories The trait theory values some traits or qualities of a leader. This theory is based on the assumption that the person is more important than the situation. It received some endorsement when it appeared that leaders such as Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin appeared to possess a mystical charm which captivated their followers. Trait theory assumers that A leader's intelligence should be above average and he or she should possess the ability to deal with complex problems. The leader should have the ability and initiative to see and deal with complex problems. Leaders are usually very self-confident and competent at their job. Leaders should have the ability to see problems in the wider context. This is known as the 'helicopter factor'. Trait theory has since attracted considerable criticism, as it places the individual's traits before the theories of management. But over the years history is replete with examples which indicate that such a theory has indeed worked wonders for the oraganisation or the country. Style Theories Style theories are based on the assumption that employees will work harder for managers who adopt certain styles of leadership. The following four styles were identified by Huneryager and Heckman in 1967: The dictatorial style: The manager tells his or her subordinates what to do, with the implied threat that they will be punished if they do not obey orders. This style is not widely used in industry and commerce. The autocratic style: Decision making is controlled by the leader, and participation by subordinates is not encouraged. Such a leader takes autocratic decisions based on his understanding of the situation. The democratic style: Such a leader believes in adopting an approach in which the subordinates are also consulted while taking some key decisions.
